A Throggs Neck
woman is giving back to her neighborhood by creating initiatives for parents
and starting a food pantry for those in need.
Angela Torres says she wants
to elevate the conversation for other people who may be fearful or don’t have
the opportunity to do so.
Torres is a PTA President,
member of Community Board 12, a News 12 Education Ambassador and a parent
advocate helping other parents get the support they need.
She is hoping to make a
difference in the community.
“We made a lot of noise about
the fact that not all the kids had devices, and guess what, now in the Bronx,
the device divide has now been shortened,” Torres says. “There’s power in
bringing people together, hearing what their concerns are and bringing it to
the forefront.”
She didn’t stop there.
Once Torres saw a need for
people facing food insecurities, she enlisted her friends and family and
started a food pantry to serve Bronx families twice a week.
“It’s all about elevating
things and working together with others,” Torres says. “That’s how you build
community and that’s you create a community.”
Torres does all this community
work along with the duties of being a mother and an auditor full-time.
She was recently named among
the 2021 Power Women of the Bronx
She hopes her work provides a
spark of inspiration for others.
“I hope that my children, and
my children’s children, and others in the neighborhood see that there are
wonderful things that they can do,” Torres says. “There their little bit is
enough to help make change, real change in the world.”
