Kenya Mighty teaches music to kids 5-12 years old. She teaches at Nest Music Conservatory, an extracurricular program that teaches music theory and how to play different instruments.
“There was a lot of child care, but there was so much potential that kids have in music, but they never touched an instrument,” said Kenya Mighty.
She saw a lack of music education in the borough. She said most kids do not get to experience music the way she teaches it.
Mighty has a lifelong passion for music. She wants kids to be able to express themselves through song.
“Music is the quickest way to learn, to create, to do. It's inspirational,” she said.
Ethan Feliciano, 9, says he has seen himself change for the better in the past two years being a part of the program.
“I'm pretty shy, but sometimes I can probably get into the vibe I play. I learned it's all. It's all to have fun,” he said.
The learning at the conservatory does not stop at music. In the past few years kids have also started to learn coding.
“They're learning how to create applications that can be used and for people's needs. But they're also learning how to be business minded, how to make decisions,” said Mighty.
An after school program is offered for kids 5-12 years old along with a pick up and drop off service.
