A 22-year-old Bronx native that was killed in World War II was honored in Unionport on Friday.

John H Sukel was a co-pilot for an Army aircraft that was shot down during the war. Sukel and his men survived the crash and were captured as prisoners of war.

Sukel and his men were mistaken for Candian soldiers that had attacked the town the night before.

There are memorials over the world for Sukel and his crew from Germany to Georgia, and now there is one in the place he called home, the Bronx.

The street where Sukel lived is now a permanent reminder of the sacrifice he made to the U.S.
