A nonprofit group in the Bronx is helping those who are struggling with gender identity.
As a teen, Sean Coleman found it hard to find organizations that focused on transgender issues. That's why he now is the head of the organization Destination Tomorrow, a nonprofit organization that supports transgender people ages 13 to 24 years old.
Coleman holds a support group on Garrison Avenue in Hunts Point every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The organization not only provides a safe haven, but it also gives mental health services to those who are struggling.
Coleman says out of all the five boroughs, the Bronx lags behind in providing support for transgender people. He says talking and listening are key when dealing with a loved one who is transgender.
Organization members plan to head to Crotona Park over the weekend for Bronx Pride, a celebration of the borough and the LGBTQ community.
