Cardinal Timothy Dolan wrote Wednesday that Bishop John Jenik, an auxiliary bishop accused of sexual abuse of a minor, has stepped aside from public ministry and moved out of his parish in the Bronx.
The archdiocese says someone came forward accusing Jenik of having an inappropriate relationship with a teenage boy in 1980.
Dolan said that the allegation was found credible and substantiated after an examination.
Dolan wrote in a letter to the Our Lady of Refuge Parish, where Jenik has served since 1978, that this was the first time any allegation against Jenik has been made.
He said that the case had been referred to the Holy See, which will make the final judgment and decide on an appropriate resolution.
"We'll survive, we'll move, and it hurts a lot if it's true, or if even it's not," says congregation member Guillermo Zepeda. "It still hurts, but as far as our parish and the services and everything that we provide, we'll go on."
Jenik also wrote a letter to his parish in which he continues to deny the allegation, but says that he will abide by the protocols of the archdiocese's policy.
