Mayor Eric Adams is planning to deploy 1,000 more police officers to patrol the Bronx after a week of gun violence - and residents told News 12 that they’re feeling a bit at ease following the announcement.
This comes after more than a dozen shootings within a week, including a mass shooting at Haffen Park in Baychester.
Officials said they found more than 60 shell casings on Saturday night. The shooting left a 32-year-old man dead. It also left a 17-year-old girl fighting for her life and three other people wounded.
Residents told News 12 the Bronx needs extra help and having more officers around may be the answer.
“It’s good,” said Trevor Thomas, of Baychester. “It helps the situation because people are not easy. Some people are no good. They don’t have no love for one another, you understand. This is good to do that.”
“Having a thousand cops that also understand the community as well, that’s a big deal,” said Ashley Mcnaughton, of Baychester. “So, it shouldn’t be nothing to seem like it’s intimidating; but I definitely think it’s need for sure.”
Adams also said he wants to sit down with gang members and the shooters to see if they can talk to end the violence.
