Bronx residents are celebrating the Fourth of July, but many don?t realize that one of the architects of American freedom came from the Morrisania section of the Bronx. Lewis Morris attended the Continental Congress where he signed the Declaration of Independence. His estate covered much of what is now the south Bronx. He even suggested Morrisania as the new capital for the United States. Morris had the first Third Avenue Bridge built, connecting the Bronx to Manhattan across the Harlem River. He died in Morrisania in 1798 and is buried at Saint Ann?s church.
