Hunger advocates say more than one million Bronx and city residents are going hungry. Many Bronx residents say this is why they are taking part in National Hunger Awareness Day Tuesday.

According to the Food Bank for New York City, many families are forced to make difficult choices between everyday necessities and food. Officials say low wages and fixed incomes along with housing and medical costs are making it difficult for families to afford to eat.

City officials say one way to help children get proper nutrition is for residents to take advantage of the free school breakfast program. The Food Bank of New York is calling on residents to take action to stop hunger. Food Bank officials say volunteering at soup kitchens or food pantries is one way to help the hungry people.
