Five hundred students from the Bronx River Community Charter School in kindergarten through eighth grade were out on the banks of the Bronx River Friday morning for an outdoor experiential learning experience.
The goal of the all-school event is to create a pop-up Bronx River Museum that shares the children’s learning with each other and their families.
“Keep the Bronx River clean,” chanted some kindergarteners-turned-environmentalists who participated in the day.
Each grade level took part in a different project related to the river, its habitats, parkland and the importance of maintaining and cleaning up the environment.
One eighth grader told News 12 The Bronx that she was excited to use real sunlight to power her display’s solar panel instead of the flashlights from her classroom.
Parents were also invited to participate, with some using grabbers to pick up trash in the park.
“We really believe very strongly in hands-on experiential learning for our students,” said Antoinette Bradley, the co-director of the middle school.
