A man known as the "Bishop of the Bronx" was honored in Belmont Monday.
East 187th Street and Tiebout Avenue is now co-named Reverend Dr. Samuel G. Simpson Way to honor his contributions to the community.
Crowds gathered for song and prayer outside the Bronx Baptist Church to remember Simpson, who died three years ago.
Simpson devoted 45 years of his life to the community. He emigrated from Jamaica and started two churches in the Bronx.
Family members took home their own street sign commemorating Simpson.
Community members say Simpson was always pleasant and took time to listen to anyone who wanted to speak to him.
An area on Murdock Avenue where his other church is located has also been co-named in honor of Simpson.
