A Venezuelan Bronx high school student has been released from ICE custody after 10 months in a Pennsylvania facility. His controversial detention in May sparked months of rallies and drew involvement from political leaders advocating for his release.
A celebration was held at Middle Church in Manhattan for Dylan Contreras’ homecoming.
Contreras expressed relief at being able to sleep in his own bed and reunite with his mother and siblings. He thanked those who supported his release and acknowledged others who remain in detention, standing before signs reading “Por fin” — “finally, Dylan is free.”
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said Contreras is now wearing a GPS tracking device and will receive due process. If a judge determines he does not have legal grounds to remain in the United States, he could face removal.
Contreras had been a freshman at Ellis Prep in Marble Hill, a school for students who are learning English and have recently arrived in the United States. He was arrested and taken into custody in May following a routine immigration hearing and remained detained until this past Wednesday.
At the homecoming, elected officials criticized ICE’s handling of the case, saying Contreras entered the country legally.
Contreras’ next steps are to return to school and try to reclaim a sense of normalcy while facing ongoing court proceedings that will determine whether he can remain in the country.
