Bronx woman aims to reduce litter, incorrect trash disposal at NYCHA locations

A Bronx woman is going door to door each week with the hope to make a difference.
Brigitte Vicenty says 10 years ago she realized the bags of recyclables she was putting outside her NYCHA apartment building were being mixed with other trash. The issue prompted her to start the Inner City Green Team and in 2017, she entered a city competition that called for the best ideas to reduce litter and incorrect garbage disposal.
Vicenty’s door-to-door recycling pilot program at the Brownsville Houses in Brooklyn received $20,000 for winning, but now she says her pilot program could do so much for everyone with more funding.
"Creating jobs for NYCHA residents, creating civic engagement and solving the issues of the environment and solving the waste management issues at NYCHA," Vicenty says.
News 12 reached out to NYCHA for a statement and it said in part:
“NYCHA has fully supported Ms. Vicenty's project from its inception as one of two winners of the 'Zero Waste in Shared Space Challenge' since installing recycling infrastructure in every NYCHA development in 2016, NYCHA has worked closely with partners including DSNY and non-profit community-based organizations to increase recycling participation.”
