A Bronx woman with muscular dystrophy has been named Ms. Wheelchair New York 2017.
"I would say I lived a normal childhood, for someone in a wheelchair," says Dayniah Manderson, who is a teacher and a mother. "I have battle scars from falling out of my wheelchair."
In her new role, she'll be traveling around the state making public appearances to raise awareness of disabilities.
She says that now she wants to help other people deal with their own disabilities.
"People with disabilities need to have access to housing," she says. "You should not have to stay with someone else, or be confined to a nursing home or live in bad conditions."
