Brooklyn Rep. Nicole Malliotakis held a news conference Sunday with other elected officials to raise awareness about an ongoing crisis in Cuba.
This comes as thousands of people in Cuba recently took to the streets to revolt against what they consider to be a corrupt dictatorship.
They met outside Victor's Cafe on West 52nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenue, to both support this staple of Cuban Cuisine and bring attention to the crisis happening on the island.
Similar rallies were displayed by Cuban Americans in the United States.
Videos on social media have shown violence committed by the Cuban government against its people, with hundreds being arrested.
The internet also remains restricted in the country.
The issue is personal for the Brooklyn congresswoman as her mother fled Cuba to come to the United States over 60 years ago.
Malliotakis is calling on the Biden administration to partner with the international community and stand with the Cuban people.
Malliotakis says it is very important for both Democrats and Republicans to put politics aside to help Cubans fight for basic human rights.
