Dozens of tenants living at 1111 Ocean Ave. rallied outside of Brooklyn Housing Court on Monday, saying their landlord has refused to make repairs and is now trying to evict several tenants.  

The first of many tenants who could face eviction soon made their first court appearance Monday, with their fellow tenants showing out at court in solidarity. They say no one should be evicted or pay rent at the building if the current conditions continue.  

Those conditions in the apartment building include roach infestations, leaks in the rooftop, and tenants say they’re currently on rent strike due to the disrepair they’re forced to live with.  

“Conditions inside the building are horrendous… collapsing ceilings, rats, roaches, the building is filthy,” said tenant Paige Campbell, who also said the elevators are unsafe. “There is no gas in the north side of the building and hasn’t been since March… many of us are on strike because we are not the landlord and the landlord is not holding up their end of the deal.” 

News 12 reached out to Sam Wasserman, the person tenants say is the landlord of the Ocean Avenue building, and is awaiting a response.
