A group of Brooklyn seniors gather at the Brooklyn Sports Club in Starrett City to play pickleball multiple times a week.

Pickleball is a game similar to tennis. It does not require any prior skills and is easy to play.

Studies show that people who do 2 ½ hours to five hours of moderate exercise every week can reduce their risk of early death by more than 20%, and by up to 30% for those who exercise five to 10 hours per week.

Many of the pickleball players say the game is good for their bodies and brains.

"It's a really fun game and I think everyone should try it. I don't care how old you are," said 83-year-old Cora Dennis.

Charles Gaillard, 74, began playing after recovering from a hip replacement.

"I have arthritis all over my body, but you could never tell. I'm in pain like everybody else but I'm not going to let that stop me from moving," he said.

The Brooklyn Sports Club offers open pickleball for seniors every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
