Bushwick residents are calling on the city to help clean piles of trash that they say have lined the neighborhood’s streets for months.
Residents say the situation is a health crisis and has caused a rodent infestation. They say they’ve called 311 many times, but the city has yet to tend to the issue.
News 12 was told neighborhood trash pickup seemed to have increased following pandemic lockdown, but now the piles of trash are back and have become worse.
Some residents attributed the situation to outdoor dining and a lack of sanitation employees.
Members of community organizations, like the Clean Bushwick Initiative and This Bushwick Life, say the trash isn’t just unsanitary, but it’s also causing even bigger health and environmental issues.
For those interested in helping, members with the Clean Bushwick Initiative are set to have their next neighborhood cleanup on Jan. 17.
