Sunny, hot weather hit the Bronx Thursday, and residents headed outdoors to enjoy it despite an air quality advisory from the state Department of Environmental Conservation issued for the day.
Residents packed Soundview Park, enjoying the sun, taking walks and playing basketball. One player said it's important to stay hydrated when taking advantage of the summer weather.
"I get to run around and work out in this weather," says Opeoluwa Oladele. "I can't do it in the cold."
Elsewhere, the Island Current Fleet on City Island was up and running with a full boat of people on board looking to fish.
Capt. Danny Swedberg, who commands one of the fleet's three boats, said that Bronx residents of all ages came to City Island for the weather.
Fishermen in the borough said they couldn't wait to go out on the water.
"It's a meditation for me," said Angel Serrano. "I'm thinking about nothing but catching fish. This is my yoga."
Swedberg said the Island Current Fleet is expecting more crowds next weekend for Memorial Day.
The Environmental Protection Agency is warning people with problems like asthma to take extra precautions while going outdoors. Officials also are advising people to be careful with outdoor activities and to avoid sleeping with their windows open.
