An all-electric Volkswagen was engulfed in flames Wednesday after the battery caught fire, that's what FDNY officials told News 12 on the scene.

Officials on the scene called it a "freak accident."

“This is not a good thing with electric cars, this is not the first time I’ve seen a car like this," said Agostino, an East New York resident.

It happened near a gas station in East New York at the intersection of Conduit Boulevard and Liberty Avenue
