The Cardinal Hayes football team is used to being on top of the city’s Catholic League but had a 2-8 record last year. Now, they’re celebrating their state Catholic League championship.
This marks the first state championship in the school’s history, and the first time that any team from New York City has won the state Catholic League championship.
Quarterback Rich Belin, a junior at the school, says Hayes faced their fair share of obstacles, including an unplayable home stadium that forced them on the road for every game.
While Cardinal Hayes is no stranger to football trophies, this historic title will be the talk of the trophy case for years to come.
