A Bronx family says they can’t catch a break after having yet another generator stolen from their family-owned taco truck.
Catarino Gregorio says it has been a tough year for him and his family, who own the taco truck in Melrose.
"Around 5 a.m., they broke the lock from the back of the truck - they took it,” said Gregorio.
He says earlier this summer, a group of men stole the generator, which operates the truck, and that was just the first time.
"We had little savings so we were able to buy a new one,” said Gregorio.
However, this past Saturday, their $3,000 generator was taken from them again - this time, in broad daylight.
The family says as a distraction, a man pulled up in a white van and got out to ask them if they had extra oil for his car.
Seconds later, they saw a group of four or more guys casually remove the generator and put it in the van.
The family says they tried stopping them but could not keep up.
"For my mom, who has very high blood sugar, she couldn't even breathe that time when that happened. She was shaking,” said Gregorio.
His mother was transported to the hospital. The family has since shelled out an extra $2,000 to rent a generator for the month in the meantime.
They’ve created a GoFundMe account to help raise enough money to hopefully own another one sometime soon.
"With that, we can't work. We couldn't work for almost two days straight. We lost a lot of customers,” said Gregorio.
They say a family member recently passed from coronavirus and it seems as though they have lost hope.
