Wednesday marked the first full day of Dia De Los Muertos, a Mexican holiday that honors the lives of dead loved ones through celebration.
Azteca Bakery in Soundview is offering sweet treats and bread for the holiday’s start, decorating its storefront in bright smiling skulls.
Maria Escobar, co-owner of the bakery, says the bread resembles the body of someone who has passed with their arms crossed.
The celebrations that took place on Halloween were for children who have died, and Escobar says today is for the adults who have passed. In Mexico, Escobar says they light candles to end the holiday and that many bring candles and flowers to their loved ones’ graves when in Mexico.
Dia De Los Muertos ends on Nov. 2.
