The public can take a stroll around Central Islip while learning about its history.

On Thursday, the Central Islip Civic Council and local and state leaders officially announced the opening of the new Central Islip History Trail.

The 5.75-mile trail will take people through town.

During the adventure, people can learn more about the community's history by scanning QR codes on historic buildings.

"We're looking back at our history with the trail and reminding ourselves where we came from and where we are today," said Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine.

The urban trail was funded through New York State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative.

Nancy Manfredonia, with the Central Islip Civic Council, considers herself lucky to be part of the planning.

"I have lived in CI most of my life and find this to be the most amazing community. But so many people know nothing about it at all. It's great for people who live here and people who are coming from far too — it's open to everybody," said Manfredonia.

Manfredonia wants to educate the public.

She says this trail protects the land and history while celebrating the new developments in town.

"Instead of having vandalized buildings of an old hospital, you have a vibrant new community with people enjoying it, and this trail is just icing on the cake."
