New York City on Monday launched a new hotline that tells people whether they have an open warrant.

According to the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice, the South Bronx has the highest concentration of open warrants in New York City. Many of the warrants are for low-level offenses.

As for how it works, you can call the hotline at 212-298-3160 and give some basic information. The Legal Aid Society is then able to check the city database for any outstanding warrants a person may have. The society can advise a person on what steps to take if they do have a warrant.

The pilot program began Monday and runs for four weeks. The service is free.

The hotline is currently only available for the Bronx. But if it's successful, the Legal Aid Society says it hopes to open it up for all boroughs.
