Tenants in Claremont say they have been without cooking gas for three weeks.

"Right now, we're talking about the 26th of October. To date, we don't have gas in the whole building," said Abdoulie Bah, who lives at 1355 Findlay Ave.

Bah and his neighbors have had to get creative with home-cooked meals.

"You come home, you're tired, you have to cook, there is no shop, there is no place open at that time, you can not cook, you cannot do anything," said Bah.

Last week, Bah and his neighbors rallied outside the building with the support of New Settlements tenant organizing project, Community Action For Safe Apartments.

"Residents have long dealt with nonresponsive building management and poor communication around leases, vouchers and rent balances," said a spokesperson for CASA.

Bah says it was not until CASA reached out to Denali Management, the property management group, that they got hot plates delivered to their apartments.

"You call there's no answer, you send an email, there's no reply, you go to the website to also write to them, you don't get anything back. That was when they brought us these burning plates, which are very terrible, you could have them, it takes like one hour to turn on and it doesn't do anything," said Bah.

Denali Management posted notices to tenants' doors, saying work would begin to switch out gas stoves with electric ones on Nov. 18 and 19.

Denali Management released the following statement: "Management is working expeditiously to restore cooking services to all the residents. To hasten that outcome, a building wide conversion to electric cooking appliances has already begun. This will result in the restoration of cooking services sooner, new efficient appliances being installed in resident’s apartments, and an embrace of NYC’s push for general electrification to combat climate change."

News 12 followed up with Denali Management for a timeline on when the repairs would be completed, but it has not yet responded.
