More than 1,200 cadets from the U.S. Military Academy’s Class of 2029 completed their field cadet basic training, culminating in the academy’s historic “March Back.”

The 12-mile trek began at 3 a.m. Monday morning, with cadets carrying nearly 35 pounds of gear as they made their way back to the West Point barracks. The march marks the final step in six weeks of rigorous basic military training and serves as a symbolic transition into academy life.

“This is a widespread tradition that also brings in graduates from previous classes of the U.S. Military Academy,” one cadet explained. “They march alongside the new cadets, symbolizing unity and continuity.”

The March Back is a deeply rooted tradition at West Point, reinforcing the values of endurance, camaraderie, and legacy. It’s also a moment of pride for incoming cadets, many of whom have looked forward to this milestone since the start of their training.
