The News 12 Storm Watch Team continues to keep an eye on the tropics. Hurricane Erin exploded into a Category 5 early Saturday with winds of 160 mph and gusts of 190 mph. This is not only the first hurricane of the 2025 season, but the first major hurricane (category 3 or above) and the first category 5 hurricane of the season as well. As of Saturday evening, it is churning near Puerto Rico and could potentially impact Long Island midweek. While the path does still look to stay far offshore, the News 12 Storm Watch Team will continue to monitor waves and wind that could peak midweek. Dangerous rip currents and coastal flooding will need to be closely monitored as well. The News 12 Storm Watch Team will provide updates every step of the way.
