Liberty Water crews were back on the job this weekend, responding the most recent water main break of the winter – this time in Lynbrook.
The break happened overnight Sunday on Mill River Avenue, just off Ocean Avenue. The company says freezing temperatures are to blame.
Resident Michael Trotta says he was awakened around 3 a.m. by the sound of construction crews working across the street from his home.
“I heard a lot of commotion and [saw] lights,” Trotta said. “We thought someone was throwing a party without us. They showed up, dug a hole, and did it in a professional manner. Took them about six hours.”
Trotta says his water service was not impacted by the break.
“We were only affected by the commotion,” Trotta said. “My neighbor just came back from Maryland, and we called her to let her know the street might be closed. But they did a nice job. We were not inconvenienced from what I could tell.”
He adds that water main problems are not new to the area and believes aging infrastructure is a contributing factor.
“This stuff wasn’t built yesterday. We used to have water main breaks all the time on Ocean Avenue, but they fixed that last year. It’s getting older,” he said.
Liberty says it has repaired water main breaks in Merrick, Bellmore and on the Oceanside and Baldwin border over the past month alone. It said 25 customers were affected by the overnight break. The company says water service was fully restored by 10 a.m. Sunday.
