An NYPD officer and other community volunteers stepped up to help a group of underprivileged young women enjoy their prom night.

The 10 seniors from Crotona International High School say they hadn't even expected to go to the dance.

"It's exciting to have the nice hair for my prom," says Cristaly Tavarez, one of the teens. 

But she and the others received professionally done makeup, nails and hair for free, thanks to donations and volunteers like NYPD Officer Victor Matos, Community Board 6 and United Chaplains.

"It's a beautiful thing to have the community come together on their own time to do something beautiful for these girls," Matos says.

Melissa Cunillera, a makeup artist and founding sponsor of the program, agrees.

"I think the most important thing is to give back to your community, because it also shows the girls that they can also give back when they get older," she says.
