Con Edison crews were seen making repairs on Monday, one day after a gas main exploded on Bedford Park Boulevard.

Bedford Park residents said just before 10 a.m. Sunday morning, they heard what sounded like an explosion, then smelled gas.

"The smell of the gas was really bad, you could feel it on your mouth," said Josephine, who lives down the block.

According to Con Edison, a valve on the gas main ruptured, causing what sounded like an explosion.

Residents said they saw clouds of gas and debris spewing from the construction zone on Bedford Park Boulevard.

They recall being immediately evacuated from their homes. They said they couldn't return for over an hour.

News 12 captured residents masked up to avoid gas inhalation.

Police said five people were injured. They say two people were treated on scene, and three people were transported to a hospital.

Emergency crews were on scene immediately making repairs to the gas main.

In a statement to News 12 on Sunday, Con Edison said it expected full gas restoration Sunday evening.

"I have no hot water because it works by gas, and I have no gas to cook, at all," said Joe, who lives multiple blocks away.

Garden Market, a local deli, has reopened, but an employee said, without gas, they are turning customers away.

"We're losing a lot of business. Most of our sales are from the grill... so customers are upset when they come in and can't get their food," said an employee.

Con Edison released the following statement on Monday:

"Con Edison has restored service to more than 100 customers affected by the gas outage that began on Sunday morning. Crews are making additional repairs to the pipe and will work to restore service to the 643 customers who are still affected."

There is currently no estimated restoration time for residents still without gas service.
