The New York City Department of Buildings issued two violations to Luna Park following an incident that involved the Cyclone, Coney Island’s nearly 100-year-old rollercoaster.
The violations include failure to maintain due to the cracked sprocket, and failure to notify the DOB of the incident.
The Cyclone will remain closed until the necessary repairs are made and the ride passes inspection.
The ride was evacuated mid-ride on Thursday due to a crack in the chain sprocket, which forced officials to stop the coaster and safely remove all passengers.
Local residents expressed mixed reactions. Alexis Gabriele, a frequent visitor to Coney Island, shared her concerns about the ride.
“It always feels like there's going to be a problem,” Gabriele said. “I would not be riding that again.”
Another resident, Neisha Worrell, echoed the sentiment, calling the Cyclone “super scary.”
The Cyclone is an iconic part of Coney Island, but for now, it will sit idle as it waits the green light from safety inspectors.
