Fourteen heroes will be inducted into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame Thursday night, and some of them are from right here in Fairfield County.
Bridgeport's Juliet Taylor and Fairfield's Alex Plitsas are among the inductees.
Taylor served in the U.S. Army from 2000 to 2015.
She may have left the armed forces 10 years ago, but that hasn't stopped her from continuing to serve her country in other ways.
Taylor is an intake and program access specialist with the Connecticut Veteran Legal Center in West Haven.
She helps support fellow veterans through a wide range of potential challenges like mental illness, homelessness or even substance abuse.
"It's not always about giving money. It's about giving time to these veterans in need," Taylor says. "It's giving them a shoulder, it's being available, it's being present."
Plitsas is a U.S. Army combat veteran and Bronze Star Medal recipient of the Iraq War.
He ran ground and flight operations for the State Department in Afghanistan during the Afghan Airlift, in Ukraine, and most recently in Gaza.
Plitsas and his teammates helped evacuate 10,000 people, including U.S. citizens, from war zones.
"The goal would be to continue to advocate for veterans in the community," Plitsas says. "Particularly those who are suffering from any of the afflictions that are most commonly talked about like post traumatic stress."
The induction ceremony will take place Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Gold Star Families Memorial Auditorium on the historic Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs campus in Rocky Hill.
