Police say workers at the 110 Sand Company in Melville discovered human remains in a landfill Monday afternoon.
Suffolk Crime Lab and homicide detectives combed the scene after they say a male human torso wrapped in plastic was found. Authorities say local construction companies frequently dump debris at the landfill and it is likely the body was left there Monday. Police say they are determining which companies dumped debris Monday to find how the torso got to the landfill.
The remains were taken to the Suffolk County medical examiner's office. Police are investigating who the victim is and if there are any more remains in the area.
