A New Jersey corrections officer was injured in an accidental shooting at an Essex County training facility.
Officials say that the shooting happened around 7 p.m. Thursday at the Essex County Firearms Training Facility in Cedar Grove. This is also the location of the Essex County Police Academy.
News 12 New Jersey has learned that a female corrections officer was inside the facility taking part in a requalification test. It is the test necessary so that a law enforcement officer can continue to carry a service weapon.
During that training exercise, the gun misfired and the officer shot herself in the buttocks, according to officials.
The officer was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK. Her name was not released.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating.
