The New York City Department of Education is cracking down on employees who live outside the city, but send their children to Bronx and city schools. The city has a residency requirement for students attending class in the five boroughs. Officials say they will give workers who are not following the requirement one month amnesty. The workers must admit they abused the system and pay back tuition, which can be as much as $5,000 per year. Otherwise, employees could be fired and prosecuted. The union representing the teachers says they are not above the law. However, they added that teachers should be allowed to enroll their children in schools near where they work.
