Parts of the Cross Bronx Expressway have reopened after a water main break at Jerome Avenue forced a shutdown of lanes, making for a messy commute with flooded roadways.
The FDNY says it all started around 3 a.m. when a water main busted open on Jerome Avenue and 175th Street and ripped open a huge sinkhole, stranding some morning commuters.
Traffic is now open in all directions, and crews are still working to fix the water main.
Video from Citizen App shows the water pooling in intersections and spilling over onto the Cross Bronx Expressway, backing up traffic. The city shut down all southbound lanes of the highway at Jerome Avenue, but have since reopened them.
The fire department told News 12 crews rescued eight people who were trapped in seven vehicles. One car was stuck on the road for most of the morning while the city shut down the highway.
Drivers were stuck for hours, with some getting out of their vehicles and walking around in the cold. Chopper 12 captured images of the traffic that back-up all the way onto the George Washington Bridge.
The break also caused 4 train service to be suspended between 161st Street-Yankee Stadium and Woodlawn. Train service has since resumed.
