Officials are taking drastic measures as virus cases continue to spike in New York City.

As of 6 p.m. Friday, there were 5,683 cases in the city and 43 deaths.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has ordered all non-essential workers to stay home as of 8 p.m. Sunday night.

Those who work in pharmacies, health care facilities, mass transit, media, food stores and first responders are still allowed to work.

He says people should continue to practice social distancing and all non-essential gatherings should be postponed.

Cuomo is also calling on factories and businesses that have the capability of producing protective gear like masks to reach out as supplies continue to run low. He has also stopped evictions for the next 90 days.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is also working with public schools to open enrichment centers for health care workers and others so the children will have a safe place to stay while they are at work.
