The destruction caused by Superstorm Sandy eight years ago has left a memory in the minds of New Yorkers that many say they could never forget. Now, a new proposal from the city’s Department of City Planning aims to help prepare the city for the next time disaster strikes.
The proposal has four main objectives:
- Strategies against flooding
- Ensuring buildings can withstand flooding
- Infrastructure to eliminate hazards
- Ensuring residents and businesses are prepared
The proposal is now being reviewed by 59 community boards, as parts of the city face different needs. DCP says there are 520 miles of diverse waterfront, like businesses and homes in Williamsburg and Gerritsen Beach.
The proposed plan will also be reviewed by the City Council and the mayor.
