An 86-year-old disabled Bronx woman is facing homelessness after a fire destroyed her home two weeks ago.
Her family says she does not qualify for temporary housing and has been staying in a hotel with help from the Red Cross and other organizations but that support is now coming to an end.
Known in her community as Miss Joyce, the woman spent decades caring for others as a longtime childcare provider in the Bronx, opening her home to families in need. Her family says she does not have home insurance or the financial means to make the repairs needed to safely return home.
The hotel’s general manager has been accommodating her stay on a day-by-day basis, but her daughter, Karen Woodwall, says the family is now urgently searching for senior housing or a disability-friendly rental and hopes someone can step in to help.
