Dozens of Van Nest tenants displaced by a massive Commonwealth Avenue fire earlier this month say they want a chance to recover whatever they can from their scorched apartments.
"All we want is an update to know when we can get into the building and get what we can save," says Johnny Cabrera.
The fire left 23 people with minor injuries, and the survivors left behind almost all of their belongings. They've been unable to return to collect anything that might have escaped destruction.
They say their building superintendent tells them the building might be condemned.
That has left the building's former residents concerned that thieves may sneak inside and take whatever's left -- especially since there's an open gate leading into the basement.
Police say they've placed officers outside to prevent such looting.
