Since the deadly parking garage collapse that took place in lower Manhattan on April 18, the Department of Buildings has shut down four more parking garages across the city.
Two of those parking garages are located in Brooklyn, including one in Park Slope located on 12th Avenue. The DOB says they did a sweep across the city’s garages with engineers working on site, determining that the Park Slope garage was structurally compromised, ordering it to be partially vacated.
Just 30 minutes away, a parking garage on Stillwell Avenue in Coney Island was fully vacated after the DOB said the garage was in severe disrepair.
A total of 78 parking garages were inspected, and these two Brooklyn garages were among the four that contained structural concerns in areas of the buildings that required immediate vacating.
The agency says that owners of any NYC building with parking structures must follow inspection requirements that went into effect last year, including the owners required to hire their own private engineer and have their parking structures inspected at least once every six years.
