A Bronx doctor is offering advice on how to avoid ticks in the city.
Doctor Eric Applebaum at Saint Barnabas Hospital says tick season is in full swing, and it's not just a problem in the country.
"I think sometimes people get a little false sense of security that there's not a lot of animals around but in reality - there are plenty of parks, which means there are deer. And where there are deer - there are ticks," he says.
Ticks can travel, according to the city's health department, and there are three different kinds of ticks found in New York City.
The most dangerous is the blacklegged tick, a tick that carries and transmits Lyme disease.
Applebaum says if you do plan on visiting a park or hiking, then you should wear long pants and tuck your socks into them.
Also, wear light-colored clothing to spot ticks more easily.
He recommends doing wellness checks on children and pets who have been outside.
