Two years of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on some New Yorkers’ mental health and overall well-being. It has prompted a Bronx nonprofit to expand its services.
Fountain House Bronx, on Walton Avenue in Concourse Village, serves about 200 people a year who have severe mental illnesses.
They hope that number will increase when they move to Melrose, where a larger clubhouse is being built.
Michelle Rodriguez, of the Fountain House, says the attendance rate for programs has jumped 40% due to the lingering effects of the pandemic. She says the more services are needed in the community, so people don't suffer in silence.
“Often they isolate, they stay at home – and what we found is that the best therapy is community,” she said.
Administrators say the expansion will help extend services in housing, employment education and mental health. They hope to in the new Melrose building sometime next year.
