More New York City students are slated to learn how to stay safe on the streets with a new curriculum in collaboration with the city's Department of Transportation.
The DOT is looking to encourage street safety with a new handbook for fourth- , fifth- and sixth-graders.
Beginning this school year, teachers are encouraged to spend one class period a year using a workbook and instruction video to prepare students, many of whom walk to school on their own.
The materials have been available to students in the past, but are now being offered to more.
The DOT says collisions are the leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths among children in New York City.
