Roads were packed Wednesday evening as many motorists began driving to their Thanksgiving weekend destinations.

From the Cross Bronx to Bruckner expressways, Bronx residents were trying to make their way out of or through the city before the turkey hits the table on Thursday.

Nearly 51 million people are expected to be on the road during the Thanksgiving travel period. AAA says that's a 3 percent jump over last year and the highest travel volume since 2005.

AAA estimates that 89 percent of all travelers, or about 45.5 million people, are planning a road trip this year.

It's noteworthy to mention that travel is increased despite a 41 cent increase in average gas prices, according to AAA.

At the Hunts Point Avenue subway station, it was evident that plenty of people opted for the rails to get to their destinations. AAA says travel by trains, buses and cruises is expected to jump more than 1 percent to nearly 1.5 million travelers this year.
