As the city continues to dig out from the nor’easter that dumped nearly 2 feet of snow across the city this week, the New York City Department of Sanitation is updating New Yorkers on their progress and how they can help.
"We’re out there trying to fix all the quality-of-life concerns for all New York City residents, so we’re doing crosswalks, catch basins and fire hydrants and we’re trying to clear that. We've employed between 300 and 400 emergency snow laborers every single day and we’re going to employ them again tomorrow for sure and for the next couple of days,” said DSNY Commissioner Edward Grayson.
Grayson is asking for the public’s assistance in shoveling the sidewalks in front of their property and asking them to make sure they’re not pushing snow back into the bike lanes.
Grayson tells News 12 there are seven snow-melting machines across the city trying to make snow mountains disappear.
He says the snow machines can process 60 tons of snow per hour that drain into the sewage line and end up at a water treatment center.
Grayson says DSNY crews are still out hard at work in the city getting rid of the snow and is urging residents to be patient.
