Lehman College students and staff received a royal surprise visit from Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester.
The duke, cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II, spoke with some of the 14 recipients of scholarships from the St. George’s Society of New York.
The charity, which was founded in 1770, has awarded $1.4 million in scholarships to 450 CUNY students of British or Commonwealth heritage throughout the city since 2008. Some of the recipients this year included students of Jamaican, Nigerian, and Gambian descent.
The Duke of Gloucester, who is a patron of the St. George’s Society, received the presidential medal from Lehman for his contributions.
School representatives from Lehman College told News 12 that the scholarships are mainly geared toward helping students finish their academic career strong.
