Hope House is becoming a reality in Crotona Park after a 10-year wait.

Elected officials and The Greenburger Center broke ground on the new facility Tuesday, which will be an alternative to incarceration for those dealing with serious mental illness.

"For people who have no alternative now this is a chance, they will be diverted from jail and prison to treatment,” The Greenburger Center executive director Cheryl Roberts.

Roberts added Hope House will be a six-year pilot program, and that veterans and people living in the Bronx when they are arrested will have preference in getting access to hope house.

The facility will offer long-term residential care for eight men and eight women who are at least 18 and live in the five boroughs. The Hope House is expected to open in 2025.
