(AP) A reorganization in the state Senate resulted in the addition of a single job.

And that single job and its six-figure salary have gone to the son of the powerful state lawmaker who was a key figure in the Senate's recent power struggle.

The Senate's Democratic majority confirms that Pedro G. Espada, a former assemblyman and New York City councilman, has been hired as deputy director for intergovernmental relations. The job comes with a $120,000 salary.

Espada is the son of Pedro Espada, the Bronx Democrat who was instrumental in this summer's Senate coup. The elder Espada was at flip-flopping dissident involved in the Senate chaos that erupted in June. Five weeks later, he was back with the Democrats while holding onto lucrative leadership positions.

Espada denied Tuesday that his son's hiring was part of any deal. The creation of the new job for Espada's son is the latest political appointment during the governor's hiring freeze.
