An event called Unity for the Community was held Saturday to honor the memory of those lost to gun violence.
One of those victims, 2-year-old Davell Gardener Jr., would have been nearly 6 years old Saturday, 4 years to the day he was shot and killed in his crib in BedStuy.
The event featured music, dancing and a moment of silence, with a ceremonial release of balloons in honor of those lost.
Organizers tell News 12 it will take the entire community to bring an end to gun violence.
"This is a combined celebration of all of the people that were lost over the years. But especially for this baby. It was a tragedy,” said organizer Mike Tucker. “And as I said, people just want to celebrate his life and honor his family and honor him and let them know that they're not alone.”
Gardner’s family members declined to be named, citing safety concerns over those behind his killing, but spoke to News 12 about the joyful life he lived before his tragic death.
They say despite the upbeat music, the day is a tough reminder of what they lost.
"It's hard. It's definitely painful. But it's love at the same time because you see so many come out and to show love,” said a member of Gardner’s family.
Tucker says he wants kids in the community to know that there are opportunities available to them, saying that is the key to preventing further violence.
“They have to understand the consequences of violence, and that there are people in the community, clubs, organizations, people they may not always see, but they are there working to make sure they have the ability to succeed," he said.
